Well found another 91 Z28 i'm heading off to go look at. black on black hard top, less that 100K on a crate motor paint 3 weeks old, transmission less that 3K miles. 4th gen seats, center console and rear end. supposedly the under body is in good shape with no rust......
only downside is it's an auto..... but that will change if i bring it home.... will let you know

guy is asking $4800. might offer $4000. car has some issues, but nothing real major.
pinion seal is leaking, but he has another 4th gen rear.
paint is not great. 10 footer, but definitely not perfect and will need a respray/touchup in a year or too if not sooner.
couple of little stress crack in body. on on each fender (no big i can weld it back up or buy new fenders) and one small crack on the back corner of the hard top when the back part of the rain gaurd meets the hardtop. i don't think this is a big deal as my current 91 has the same crack, but larger.
bushing are cracked and will probably need replacing.
missing gas tank heat shield (have a replacement on order for my current 91 i can swap over).
outer window sweeps are missing (supposedly on order from Hawks).
other than that there are a few cosmetic things i'll need to look into fixing. he shaved the camaro flag off the front bumper, as well as the Z28 badges from the side and rear (i'd want to put those back). the rear deck-lid needs to be re-aligned, same with the hood. the windshield was recently replaced and the rubber outer seal doesn't sit flush with the windshield a pillar.
other than that i think that's everything. ohhh and it comes with an aluminum drive shaft, LS1 cooling fans, and wheel spacers to run Vette Rims on it.
trying to come up with the money but the under body is solid. looks like the front jack point got crushed on both sides and they repaired or try to pull it back out straight again, a little bit of denting on the drivers side transmission sub-frame, but all in all MUCH better shape then my current 91 Z.

...one small crack on the back corner of the hard top when the back part of the rain gaurd meets the hardtop. i don't think this is a big deal as my current 91 has the same crack, but larger. That is common on Third Gens, I think 4th gens, too. That spot on the corner of the roof right behind the door is where stress cracks occur when the uni-body flexes. If you weld in sub frame connectors before welding up the crack, it should not recur.

Thanks Russ,
Trying to decide if i really want it. on the one hand it is in better shape and i love the third gens especially the 91-92 Z28's. but i also think this time next year i could have a low mileage 2010 2SS/RS. if i pay for this camaro i may not have the money for it.....
the guy has dropped the price from $5500 to $4K over 6 months. so it may drop more, but just not sure if i want to bite or not.

Though I had SFCs installed and I painted over those cracks, mine still re-appeared soon after a couple of drives. I think it's a weak area that not much can be done about except for maybe some welded re-enforcing of that area.

might be a consideration i might make if i get the car.
i wish i had the tools to cut and bend tubular steel if i did i'd probably give it a go making a tubular solid frame for my current 91. Still thinking of a way i can salvage it.
If i get the new one i might be able to take some sheet metal remove the head liner and weld in some re-informent plates on the roof lines to prevent those cracks. already thought about sub framing it. heard alot of guys dual subing it with Alistons and Spohn's.... might go that route. i would also need to look into doing the T56 conversion as it's currently an auto and i just can't do auto's......

I'm not convinced doubling up on the SFCs will do all that much. Seems to me to be a point of diminishing returns for the $$$. I do agree that the rear roof structure is a weak area of our cars. So welding some reinforcement in those corner areas might actually help, or, might cause areas around the reinforcements to wrinkle and crack as well. It's hard to say for certain.
I agree about the automatic. I think I'll drive one when they pry my cold, dead, bluing fingers from a manual gear shift lever knob...lol...

well not to certain if i will get the hardtop, however after realizing it will take me about 2 years go comfortably pay down my credit card needed to free up the extra cash for the camaro..... i am looking for another 91-92 Z28 and i found one. working with a dealership in central florida and if it all works out and the pictures i requested for the car come back good, i'll possibly be the owner of a 92 Z28 Royal Plumb Convertible. still an auto, but it has just slightly over 100K miles on it and looks as though its be really well taken care of. guess i'll see what happens in the next couple weeks.

looks like the 92 z28 Vert may be a go... financing is approved, just waiting for the dealership to get off there butts and send me the underbody pics i asked for to determine if its worth driving 400 miles to give the car a final look/test drive and decide....
i'll update as i have information.
on a sadder note this means i will more then likely be parting with two of my cars. more immediately my TR7 will need to find a home as i don't want to keep the new vert outside. then once i get some of the suspension swapped over (possibly the transmssion) my 91 will make it's way to it's finaly resting place, unless someone buys it to turn it into a racecar.... doubtful.

Unfortunately, one CAN have too many toys. Especially in these leaner times. And who knows whats going to happen with Washington if the US will default on it's debt payments. If that happens, I'm betting all deals will be off. So it's probably best to have a minimal amount of capital sinks associated to one's ownership.
I recently put my car in for sale in the local Bargain News. I put in a very high price to ward off any 'biters.' I figure if it sells, great. If it doesn't, I can't loose anyway as our cars have been going up in value and I've lost nothing. I personally don't thing it's going to sell. But, that's ok. The only call I've gotten so far is from a Automotive Marketing Systems which is a total scam from what I've been reading about in google. They charge a up front fee to sell your car to 'waiting' buyers they have lined up. If the car doesn't sell, good luck getting your @200 to $500 back. It's a organization Tony Soprano and Pauly Walnuts would be proud to be a part of....

I have dual sub-frame connectors on my T/A, but it is not because of any strength advantage that I know of. I bought the set of Alstons and had them welded in because they are strong. I also got some powder coated square tubing from scrap refrigeration unit pallets from work and had my welder make up sub frame connectors to run under the door sills. The Alstons are plenty strong enough to stiffen the frame, but the ones under the door sills are my jacking points, so I don't need to find the specific point under the car that G.M. intended for jacking points.

Russ-The thing I like best about the Spohn system is the cross bracing from the sides to the transmission support area. The sides can also be used as convenient jacking points. A real plus.
Rick-Looks like a beautiful car. That should turn a lot of heads. I wonder if Top Down Solutions is still in business?....
